POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides comprehensive social work counseling and effective ways to prevent and resolve personal, emotional and social problems that significantly interfere with students’ adjustment to school.   Possesses skills related to problem solving, planning, supervising, organizing and scheduling. Ability to handle highly sensitive personnel matters in a timely and professional manner.   This position reports to the Director of Student Services or Designee.   

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs casework intervention services as appropriate for individual students and their parents/guardians who are referred by the student’s school in order to correct personal, emotional or social maladjustment, which interfere with a student’s academic progress. (Interventions may include home visits, conferences with school personnel or referrals to local or state agencies such as the Department of Family and Children Services, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Public Health, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, etc.).

Investigates attendance problems reported by schools or persons in the community; files and presents cases in court pertaining to school attendance. Provides assistance to assigned schools to comply with the compulsory attendance law. 

Serves as home, school and community liaison for at-risk families; participates in school level committee meeting, such as 504, Individual Education Programs, in-school review meetings, student support team meetings and Circle of Support, as requested by school and other district personnel.

 

Coordinates and maintains a comprehensive referral system to provide direct service to students, parents and teachers.  Gather data necessary for assessment purposes.

 

Maintains sufficient documentation of casework for use by school staff members or outside agencies when appropriate.

 

Completes all other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.

 

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited university required.

 

Minimum of three (3) years of combined professional school social work experience in a K-12 educational setting or government/public service departments, with at least one (1) year as an intern at the graduate level in a K-12 setting is required.

 

Prior experience providing social work services and programs to students in a public school setting; makes decisions and recommendations which routinely affect the activities of others.

 

GaPSC S - 5 Certificate from the Georgia Professional Certification in Social Work and license from the State Board as a Social Worker preferred.

 

Moderate level of judgment required; must evaluate and provide guidance to student/families and approve general recommendations.  Supervisor is available to review departmental recommendations.

 

Requires regular, frequent contact with internal and external personnel of influence and decision-making responsibility to discuss issues of moderate importance; requires continuing contact with community resources. Excellent interpersonal skills are required for working with inter-organizational teams.

 

Requires excellent, listening, written, verbal and presentation skills.

 

Applies, recommends and implements technology concepts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of District.

 

Normal office setting.

 

May require travel to off-site locations for school site visits.

 

NOTE: This is a grade 28, 190-day position that pays for experience up to a Step 8.
